The
'Panchkarma' is a branch of 'Kaayachikitsa'.
The word 'Panchakarma' is comprising of two words namely 'Pancha' and
'Karma' wherein Pancha means Five and Karma means Action.
The 'Panchakarma' is curative line of treatment for all diseases which
are not amenable to 'Samana Chikitsa' i.e., polliative line of treatment.
'Panchakarma' consist of Five methods or procedure of elimination of vitiates
dashes from the body. |
Panchakarma
Treatments
Panchakarma procedures are the essence of Ayurvedic treatment. Ayurveda
believes that the impurities and toxins inside the body should be eliminated
to restore the health. For this purpose Ayurveda designed five procedures,
known as Panchakarma. Panchakarma treatments rejuvenate the body making
the internal systems clean and removing blockages and impurities from
the cells & micro channels. These five procedures are : |

Vaman
Removing the toxins by the process of emesis. Emesis is induced
by herbal medicines and it occurs very smoothly unlike regular vomiting.
Vaman is very effective for diseases of Kapha i.e. asthma, chronic
cold, sinusitis etc. |

Virechana
Removing the impurities and unwanted byproducts of digestion by
means of purgation. This process cleanses complete gastrointestinal
tract. It is advised for vitiated Pitta and diseases of skin and
blood etc. |

Basti
Enema of herbal decoction/ medicated oils / medicated ghee etc.
This enema cleans the bowel and lubricates it. This is the most
important treatment procedure in Ayurveda and it exerts its effects
on whole body. Basti is strongly recommended for arthritis, paralysis,
disorders of spine, low back pain, constipation etc. It nourishes
and puts back the vitality in body tissues. |

Nasyam
Administration of medicated oil/ ghee/juice of herbs through nasal
route. It cleanses sinuses and useful in sinusitis, hair fall and
disorders of eyes, brain etc. |

Raktamokshana
Blood letting. About 20-50 ml. of blood is removed at a time.
This is very useful in skin diseases, allergies etc.

| General
Massage
Person undergoing
the massage is made to down in a droni (a wooden plank specially made
for the massage). Then herbal oil is applied all over the body, massaging
gently. While massaging, mild to moderate pressure is applied, depending
upon status of health, organ to be massaged and underlying deformity.
This massage improves circulation and quality of sleep, alleviates fatigue,
delays aging, rejuvenates body and maintains health.

Pizhichil
This is one of the special massages for rejuvenating the body. ln this
treatment the person is made to lie in a wooden droni (a wooden bed specially
designed for the purpose). The prescribed oil is applied on the head.
Then pieces of linen dipped in warm medicated oil is squeezed over the
body, massaging the body with hands all the time. This massage is done
by two masseures who stand on the either side of the person. Pizhichil
protects from illnesses and builds up immunity. It is very effective in
all skeletal and muscular diseases, lumbago, sciatica, osteoarthritis,
rheumatoid arthritis, paralysis etc.

Navarakizhi
Navarakizi
is giving massage to the body with small linen bags filled with cooked
rice after application of medicated oil over the whole body. The process
is so named because special navara rice is used for the purpose and it
is cooked in cow's milk and certain herbal decoction. The bags are dipped
in the same mixture which is neither too hot nor cold and applied over
the whole body of the patient |
This
massage is done by two masseures who stand on either side of the person.
After completing the procedure, rice paste sticking on the body is removed
and warm medicated oil is once again applied on the body. After massaging
for few minutes, the oil is wiped off and patient is allowed to take bath
with warm water.
In this massage the whole body or specific parts are made to sweat and
it is one of the most excellent form of treatments to impart luster to
the skin and nourish the body. Navarkizhi is usually done in musculoskeletal
disorders, muscular weaknesses, low backaches etc. and as an after treatment
of Pizhichil. It also improves general health.

Shirodhara
After application of the medicated oil on the head, a person is made to
lie supine on wooden bed. A nonstop, continuous stream of the medicine
(medicated oil/ herbal decoction/milk) is made to drop gently on the forehead
from a particular height through a specially made apparatus. After the
treatment the head is fully dried with towel and person is allowed to
take bath with warm water. Shirodhara alleviates fatigue, improves memory.
lt is very effective in sleeplessness, chronic headaches, disorders of
brain, mental retardation, paralysis etc. Shirodhara is a special treatment
for mental stress and strain.

Shirovasti
This is a special technique to administer medicated oil on the head. A
leather cap is fitted on the head of the patient and prescribed oil, slightly
warm is poured into this cap. Shirovasti is usually done with the patient
sitting upright on a stool. The oil is allowed to remain inside the cap
for about 45 minutes and then it is drained out. Shirovasti is effective
in diseases of eye, headaches, facial paralysis, diseases of cranial nerves,
hair fall etc. It also improves memory, vision and mental faculties.

Udvartanam
This is a general massage done by medicated herbal powders. This massage
is specially indicated for obesity.

Netratarpanam
This is allowing medicated ghee to stagnate in and around the eyes by
which optic nerves are strengthened and eyesight is improved.
|
Merudanda
Basti
This is allowing medicated warm oil to stagnate on the spine around particular
vertebra. Useful for disc prolapse, vertebral degeneration etc.
|
Hrudbasti
This is allowing the medicated oil to stagnate on the chest around the
heart. It is very effective in coronary artery blocks.
